For some time we have intended to make a short trip into the Lake District from our base in Galloway. We finally got round to it, and booked a couple of nights in the Pheasant Inn, Bassenthwaite.

On the way down we stopped at the Metal Bridge Inn on the border for a coffee. I have seen this from the motorway for many years but had never been in there!

We took the scenic route to Bassenthwaite; this is Skiddaw.

We found this old train at the old Bassenthwaite Lake station, which is now a coffee shop.

View of the lake from an old fort near the hotel.

Old school in Cockermouth with famous alumni.

The plaque says who they were!

Cockermouth has some nice old shops.

And the Lake District gets a lot of rain!

They were celebrating the VE Day anniversary.

Crummock Water (I think!)

Coffee stop at the hotel in Buttermere.

In Keswick

At Castlerigg stone circle. Hadn’t been here for years, it’s very touristy now.

When I first visited no-one else was interested in standing stones 🙂
