First day – Lerwick, Tumblin and Burra Isle

On our wandering around Lerwick we went out along the street to the south end, past the lodberries. At Bain’s beach I spied some people in the sea! Wow – on such a lovely day I just had to get in. I handed the camera to Marwyn and went down for a quick skinny dip (no-one even notices if it’s quiet and you are unobtrusive about it). Absolutely delightful; I had never swum there before, and decided that it could become a fixture (though normally with swimwear)!

There were three other swimmers, and I got to know some of them over the next few days.

lodberries

There was still mist visible beyond the lodberries. Whilst we were in Lerwick, we decided to have a quick walk around the Knab, where we have walked many times before.

We decided to do a bit of a tour before we were able to get into the guest house; first we headed off to Scalloway. There’s a great view of it and its castle as you approach from Lerwick.

Town

In Scalloway is the memorial to the second world war “Shetland bus” between Shetland and occupied Norway, by fishing boat.

From Scalloway we went south, crossing Trondra and onto Burra Isle. On such a lovely warm day I fancied a dip at Minn beach. We had been there before when the children were small, in various weathers, but never as warm as this. It’s a beautiful place, on the west side of a tombolo.

It was certainly popular, it being a Saturday; lots of locals there.

Marwyn was soon settled on the sand whilst I headed for the water.

The water was just beautiful, crystal clear.

My little underwater camera caught a crab by some seaweed – I hadn’t even noticed it was there!

After the beach we headed back towards Scalloway and found these Shetland ponies.

We decided to head to Marwyn’s ancestral homeland, the route going by Weisdale with a great view over the islands to the south.

Near Bixter is Tumblin; Marwyn’s aunt and uncle used to live in this croft house.

We travelled back to Lerwick via East Burrafirth, where we had to stop for a coffee and take a photo of the famous cake fridge (which did exist before appearing in the “Shetland” crime series).
