We decided on a trip to the west side of Shetland, where Tumblin is, which we had already visited. There are lots of other lovely spots out there though.

As was now usual, I began my day early in the sea at Bain’s beach, where the Dim Riv (a Viking ship reconstruction) had been brought back to her usual mooring.

There were one or two lovely jellyfish; this one was about 4cm across.

We first went to Aith, which has a lovely harbour (with a modern marina now) and some lovely wild flowers down by the water.

Aith also has the lifeboat for the west side of Shetland.
From Aith we went out to West Burrafirth, where the ferry sails from to Papa Stour, another outlying island.

Further west is Sandness and Melby, where some birders had stopped for lunch by the slipway.

After Melby we went back to the south of the west mainland, to Bridge of Walls and then Raewick for another beach visit. The weather was still wonderful, so why not?! Also, we had been there with the children (and Chris) a long time ago when we had also been in the sea (or at least paddled).

At Raewick I was astonished to find the water temperature to be 19C. I had to take a photo of the thermometer!

Another great day. Probably the best spell of weather we’ve ever had on Shetland.
