It was a busy Celtic Connections this year – across to Glasgow six times in total. The second week included concerts from Paul Anderson, Session A9, Frigg (with Imar as support) and the Young Traditional Musician of the Year finals.
Paul Anderson was playing music from iconic Scots fiddlers, on their original fiddles. A delight – I love Paul’s playing, it makes me want to play more fiddle again (it gets a bit neglected with all the nyckelharpa playing!). The Juhanna Juhola trio supported Session A9 – really a duo, but their sound man adds a lot of extra stuff! Juhanna’s accordion playing is superb. Session A9 were brilliant as ever, with two of my favourite fiddlers, Adam Sutherland and Kevin Henderson.
I have enjoyed Imar’s CD “Avalanche” but must admit I found them a bit samey when heard live – lacking in sparkle and variety, and just playing much the same stuff in the same way, even with Moishe’s jigging about. However Frigg were well up to their usual standard, and didn’t disappoint at all – a fantastic performance.
We always try to get to the Young Trad Musician finals – and this year was yet another great year; it was really hard to pick a favourite, though mine was Josie Duncan and her Gaelic singing.
Yet another great Celtic Connections!
