Celtic museums

When we planned this trip, I intended to visit a couple of museums which I had read about and wanted to see. We visited Keltenwelt am Glauberg on the journey down, and Heuneberg – Stadt Pyrene whilst at the Ferienwohnung. Both were excellent.

Glauberg figure

This was the chap I wanted to see at Glauberg. This figure is somewhat larger than life size, and was found virtually intact at a burial mound. Just wonderful to see the real thing that I had only seen in books.

jewellery

A bit out of focus, but buried with the prince was this neck ring which matches the one in the sculpture.

shield

A fairly typical celtic shield, made from leather with a metal central boss to protect the hand behind.

mound

The burial mound has also been reconstructed to its likely original size. These things get flattened with farming!

museum

The museum itself is in a wonderful new building. They are trying to sell off the life size copies of the statue!

hilltop

On the hill above the museum is where there would have been a fort, or at least a protected village.

The second museum was above the Danube, at Heuneburg, known as the oldest city north of the Alps.

plateau

It’s on a huge plateau; the reconstruction is of just a small section in one corner.

houses

There are houses and workshops inside the walls.

to scale

This one shows the scale of the walls!

danube

The view of the Danube is pretty good; the city was in a commanding position.

figure by house

Another person to give scale 🙂

ramparts

The view from the edge of the plateau shows the imposing ramparts above the Danube.
